Why I Don’t Use Resin on Polymer Clay Earrings (Non-Toxic Finish)
Why I Use a Water-Based Finish Instead of Resin
When it comes to finishing my polymer clay earrings, one of the most intentional choices I’ve made is what not to use.
Resin is a popular option for adding shine, but I’ve chosen a different route - one that better aligns with my process and the comfort of the people wearing my jewelry.
A Thoughtful Alternative to Resin
Instead of resin, I use a water-based, non-toxic polyurethane called Brite Tone to seal select designs.
It creates a smooth, protective finish with a soft shine - without the heaviness or harsher chemical components that can come with resin. This allows me to achieve that polished look while keeping the overall feel of the piece light and wearable.
Why This Matters to Me
This choice is about more than just aesthetics…it’s about being intentional with the materials that come into contact with your skin.
While resin works beautifully for many makers, it can sometimes cause sensitivities for certain individuals. By using a water-based alternative, I’m able to offer a finish that feels like a more comfortable option for everyday wear.
Lightweight, Comfortable, and Made to Last
Polymer clay is already known for being lightweight, which is why I love working with it. Pairing it with a water-based polyurethane like Brite Tone helps maintain that comfort while still adding durability and protection to each piece.
You get the best of both worlds: earrings that are easy to wear and designed to hold up over time.
Staying True to My Craft
Every step of my process is chosen with care. Using Brite Tone instead of resin allows me to stay true to a more thoughtful, low-tox approach while still creating pieces that feel elevated and beautifully finished.
Made With Intention
There’s no one “right” way to create handmade jewelry, and resin absolutely has its place in the maker community.
For me, choosing a water-based, non-toxic finish is simply what feels most aligned with how I create, the materials I trust, and the experience I want you to have when you wear my earrings. Beautiful, comfortable, and long-lasting!
If you’ve ever wondered what goes into the final details of my pieces, this is a big part of it 🤍
